WIC (Women-Infants-Children) Clinic
Low income families come to the County Health Department-WIC Program to receive
coupons for formula or selected food items for themselves or their children.
These visits happen on a quarterly basis during pregnancy and the child's first
few years of life.
A Baby TALK teacher visits with families while they are waiting for services
from WIC. As parents and children wait to be seen. Baby TALK staff engage
them in songs, fingerplays, and reading aloud. Children receive free
give-away books. And parents get the support they need around the issues
of raising their young children. Referrals are made to other appropriate
agencies and services.
Many aspects of their infants' development are briefly discussed, including
the specific challenges they may share with the class. Age appropriate WIC
information and
Baby TALK Anticipatory Guidance curriculum is handed out to the families.
The Decatur Public Library bookmobile is also often scheduled to coordinate
with the WIC Clinic.
