Well Child Clinic & CHIC

Immunization Clinic

Many middle income families who have private physicians choose to immunize their children at a low cost at the Health Department's Immunization Clinic. A Baby TALK teacher greets them and gives them the Well Child handout appropriate to their child's age.

WELL CHILD ANTICIPATORY GUIDANCE

Many children under five receive their medical care and immunizations in a clinical setting at the County Health Department and CHIC (Community Health Improvement Center.) At these clinics, Baby TALK's goals are:

  • To join parents in current developmental issues
  • To do anticipatory guidance about the weeks ahead
  • To remind parents of developmental opportunities
  • To refer for needed services
Parents are also given a journaling activity, recording comments, growth, immunizations, and a brief message to their child. Because parent and child are together at the clinic, this presents an excellent opportunity for teachers to role model positive communication and play. After each session, teachers fill out a brief "encounter form" to chart progress they see in each family.

Staff also have the opportunity to read aloud to children waiting to see the doctor. Children then select a book to take home and keep.

OTHER USES FOR THE ANTICIPATORY GUIDANCE CURRICULUM

This curriculum is used in nearly every aspect of the Baby TALK program on an individual basis. When a parent calls the Warmline, part of what she will receive in the mail will be the age-appropriate section of this curriculum. When a family who regularly attends Baby TALK Times or Lapsits has a child reach a "milestone" age (or begin to exhibit behavior symptomatic of these ages) that family is given the age-appropriate piece. If a prenatal parent talks about behaviors of an older child, often the Baby TALK staff member will share the Well Child curriculum piece which most closely matches the sibling's age.
