Family Fun Times
Baby TALK sponsors Family Fun Times once each month at Head Start for groups
of preschool-aged children and their families.
These events are always focused on a topic suggested by a free book that each
family can take home. All activities are kept to this central theme. In the case
of Family Fun Nights, the ninety minute session is divided into three
components:
PARENT INSTRUCTION.
The first half hour is spent with parents alone, discussing
the theme. Parenting challenges are explored and parent discussion uncovers
solutions.
PARENT-CHILD TOGETHER.
Head Start children Join their parents for activities
together the next half hour. The focus here is on interaction between parent and
child.
WHOLE FAMILY TIME.
The last half hour includes older and younger siblings who
are brought out of child care and into a whole group. A simple activity, such as
a theme appropriate snack, is enjoyed.
Family Fun Times are so well attended (sometimes more than 200 participants!)
that the Whole Family time seems loud and chaotic. But parents and children seem
to love this time best of all, and look forward to enjoying their new book as a
whole family unit.
