Baby TALK Times
Parents of infants and toddlers face many of the same challenges and
appreciate the support and encouragement of others who have met those challenges
successfully. For this reason, support group networks among new parents are
especially appreciated and helpful. Baby TALK Times are a way to deliver child
development information and provide for parent child interaction within this
support group format.
Baby TALK Times are held by Baby TALK staff members in various school and
community sites. Click
here for Baby TALK locations and
times. Baby TALK Times are informal and conversational. Parents bring
their 0-3 year old children as well as any other siblings. Everyone sits on the
floor, and plenty of available toys and books provide interest for toddlers.
Participants visit casually at first as the children become acclimated. The
teacher then asks them each to share a success and a challenge that they have
faced with their child(ren) that week. Parents support each other with
empathetic advice and share similar experiences.
An important part of Baby TALK Times is the introduction of fingerplays,
songs, nursery
rhymes and simple games to play with children. The teacher models these
activities and then steps into the background as parents and children enjoy them
together. Even the tiniest participants begin to stretch their fingers in
anticipation of the movements of the rhymes.
